چکیده

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to establish the sternal skin conductance level (SCL) increase that would optimally detect hot flashes among breast cancer patients. METHODS Fifty-six women who had completed a similar treatment protocol for a first diagnosis of breast cancer within the previous 3 months wore an ambulatory sternal skin conductance device for one home-based daytime recording of hot flashes. RESULTS A total of 199 hot flashes were reported by the participants using the event marker. A 2-μS (μmho) SCL increase within a 30-second period, the criterion typically used, had a sensitivity of only 32% and a specificity of 97%. Comparatively, the alternative criterion proposed here, a 1.2-μmho SCL increase, yielded a sensitivity of 61% and a specificity of 90%. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence that a lower SCL criterion should be used to better detect objectively recorded hot flashes among breast cancer patients. Further work is needed to validate the proposed criterion among this population.

TITLE: Hot Flashes Among Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Androgen Deprivation Therapy: Psychosocial and Quality of Life Issues PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR:

The gold standard for objectively measuring hot flashes in women is an increased sternal skinconductance level (SCL), but validation studies in prostate cancer patients are lacking. In the laboratory,an SCL increase of ≥1.78 micro-mho in 45 s had a sensitivity of 68% and a positive predictive value of100% in detecting self-reported hot flashes among prostate cancer patients. Effect of Citalopram and Aspirin on Hot Flashes and Quality of Life in Premenopausal Women with Breast Cancer: A Randomized Double-blind Clinical Trial

Introduction: Over 70% of Iranian breast cancer patients are reported to have experienced an earlier menopause after chemotherapy. Due to the high and prevalent appearance of amenorrhea, this study focused on the efficacy of citalopram plus aspirin, compared to citalopram plus a placebo on cancerous women with chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea symptoms in premenopausal stages. Methods: In this r...

Hot Flashes in Men

Menopause is coincident with ovarian failure in women, resulting in a relatively rapid fall in levels of estrogens. Although there is no comparable hormonal event in men, some do have hot flashes. In Sweden, it was found that 33.1% of noncastrated men reported hot flashes [1]. The underlying mechanisms for this are not known. In women, hot flashes are the most common symptom of menopause and ar...
